November Parents Forum

November 26, 2018

Thank you to the parents that attended the Parents forum on Monday 26th November. We also had a representative from the Executive Governance Group, Dominic Davies, Head Teacher at Wychall, to feedback to the group all that was discussed and raised. We discussed the following points!

Jervoise OFSTED

We talked through our recent OFSTED letter with parents. We are really pleased with our judgement of Good and that OFSTED agreed with the areas of improvement that we had already identified. Some parents said that they felt disappointed that the school didn’t get a judgement of outstanding. Mrs Wheeldon explained that for the school to get that judgement we needed to get more children to a higher level of ability called Greater Depth. As a school this is something we were already working towards before the ‘OFSTED call’ but that OFSTED agreed with us. OFSTED were impressed with how many children we securely get to the expected standard by the end of Year 2 and 6 considering where some children enter the school in nursery and we shared our Year 6 books with them to show them what most children will achieve when they were in Year 6. The parents who attended were really impressed with the books and commented that they were pleased they didn’t have to produce this work when they were at school 😊!

Home Learning

In the last meeting parents asked if they could have paper hard copies of homework if they requested due to internet difficulties and app compatibility. We passed this onto teachers and the parents at the form said that they had not had any further issues since. With regards to the topic projects, this is still a working in progress action. We have been working with staff to ensure this was consistent across all year groups and each child will get a topic project for next half term inline with the reintroduction of Children’s University. Some parents mentioned that homework and reading books had not been changed as frequently as before, we have taken this onboard and will speak to staff about these issues.

If you have any further problems with home learning or planners please speak to your class teacher, Mrs Lowe, Mrs Williams or Mrs Wheeldon.

Children’s University

The DRB Ignite MAT have decided to introduce Children’s University to all the MAT schools and as many of you know this is no surprise for us at Jervoise. This will mean that children will be rewarded with the hours they put into home or independent learning and then graduate with other MAT schools. Parents at the forum were pleased about this as they felt it encouraged their children to complete their homework and go to the library etc.

E-Safety Workshop

We are planning to run a workshop. We have not confirmed a date as yet but will send out information closer to the time. These workshops will look at some of the risks children could face when using the internet and tips, guidance and strategies on how you and your child can keep safe on the internet.

Harvest Festival

Harvest assembly was a huge success and that was largely down to the hard work Year 5 had done in researching the celebration but also the generous donations everyone made! We donated all the donations to the local food bank and it was great for the children to feel they had a positive impact on the local community.

Governance

Information/Questions Shared

Due to the high level of accountability governing bodies now have the MAT felt that putting all the responsibilities on volunteers who may not have the professional expertise was unfair. Therefore, governance has changed and the accountability and responsibility lies with the MAT board. Mrs Wheeldon explained that every term each school is ‘inspected’ by a consultant who works for OFSTED to help the MAT board make judgements about teaching and learning, buildings and finance. There is now an Executive Governance Group where a collection of schools and previous governors meet to make suggestions on how can improve and how they can support each other to improve. Each school has a link governor to report back to the group and Neil Morgan is Jervoise’s link governor.
